Size Doesn’t Matter

I guess size matters to some men and women when it comes to intimacy. You know, sex. But when it comes to writing short stories, novelettes, novellas, and novels, size isn’t really all that important. What’s important is you tell your story to the best of your ability and do so in however many words the story deserves.

Naturally, as a professional writer who’s signed many contracts and taken many advances, I was required to write a certain number of words, or my manuscript would have been rejected. As a ghostwriter, the same rules apply. But the indie side of me (Bear Media) can write what I want, when I want, and how I want.

Which means I write the same way I live my life. Independently.

But when it comes to making a passive income from your words, the great Dean Wesley Smith has already pointed out (and he has the math to prove it), when it comes to publishing independently, shorter works offer a far better payout over the long haul than longer works. And that’s with only selling 4 or 5 copies per month on average of each IP you have in your catalogue. Think along the lines of long term investment, not short term profit.

The point is to build a massive catalogue. An empire if you will. Oh, and the other point is to have fun doing it. If you’re not having fun writing, get a job. It’s a hell of a lot more secure.
